Background

Dubai’s RTA has initiated rapid traffic upgrades along Al Thanya Street, one of the city’s busiest corridors. The project will help to reduce congestion, enhance connectivity as well as ensuring the safety of pedestrians along this major route, connecting Sheikh Zayed Road with Al Wasl Road.

The development will involve upgrading the existing roundabout on the service road of Sheikh Zayed Road to Al Thanya Street and the construction of another signalised crossing at the intersection linking Streets 10 and Al Thanya Street. Moreover, new walkways and pedestrian signals are being placed to give residents and commuters safer points to cross.

The project is scheduled for completion in early September and forms part of the RTA’s long-term plan to improve road efficiency in line with Dubai’s urban growth, population increase, and rising economic activity.

The RTA stated that the Street 10 intersection will cut travel distances for residents in Umm Al Sheif and Al Manara and enhance connectivity with Sheikh Zayed Road, Al Wasl Road, and surrounding areas.

The recent upgrades are an extension of previous upgrades done on the service roads along the Sheikh Zayed Road and are meant to accommodate the future increase in traffic in the region.

Al Thanya Street plays a central role in connecting Al Manara, Al Wasl, Jumeirah, Umm Suqeim, and Umm Al Sheif. The RTA anticipates that the new works will make traffic flow more relaxed, the pedestrian access more secure, and allow a better connection between the inner streets and the major highways.
