Background
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has recently completed a major upgrade of wayfinding signs throughout the Metro and Tram systems to improve the flow and clarity of travel to passengers. A total of approximately 9,000 signs were replaced and installed in cooperation with Keolis -MHI, taking over 11,000 man-hours to complete the project.
The upgrade is done in all the stations of the Red and Green Metro tracks and the Dubai Tram. Whether related to making roads easy to move on, providing visibility, or overall enhancing the experience of passengers, the priority is put on ease of following instructions.
In station entrances and exits, new signs have been put up with the exits now marked in large bold yellow boxes so commuters can easily recognize them. On platforms and concourses, directional signs and floor stickers have been introduced to guide passengers toward the correct trains and reduce congestion during busy hours.
Besides navigation, the RTA also applied forms of visual reminders to achieve the proper behaviour in the station. Stickers placed in waiting areas and platforms remind passengers to respect personal space, behave courteously, and follow public transport rules.
Special cabins also received clearer markings. Women and Children cabins now display large pink signs, while Gold Class cabins have bold gold boards. They are positioned in strategic positions to avoid unauthorised access and to make those with access to them feel comfortable.
The new signage system has been incorporated with the overall communication assisted at RTA. The messages have become consistent on station information boards, spoken notices on trains, mobile applications, and social media. This integrated solution provides a uniform way of delivering the same instructions to passengers regardless of the means of accessing it.
By implementing these changes, RTA will attempt to make the public transport system in Dubai more convenient, more orderly, and easier to access, which will further cement its status as one of the most effective metro networks in the world.
