  • New centers will be dedicated to composite structures, metal processing, and engineering excellence.

Key Background

Boeing and Alphavest Capital inked a strategic memorandum of understanding to create five aerospace excellence centers in Morocco. The initiative is a large kick-start for Morocco’s aspiration to become a world aerospace manufacturer and innovation leader. The five centers will individually focus on advanced capabilities like engineering and precision manufacturing of tubes, ducts, fittings, sheet metal components, composite structures, and special logistics-related processes.

The deal comes after a 2016 industrial partnership agreement between Boeing and the Moroccan state reaffirming the two nations’ bilateral long-term partnership in the aerospace value chain. Alphavest Chairman and CEO Majid Benmlih highlighted the importance of the decision, labelling it a “historic turning point” for industrial possibilities in the country. Benmlih quoted Morocco’s strengths, including cost competitiveness, human capital, and predictability of the delivery schedule.

Morocco’s space sector is already one of Africa’s most vibrant, with over 150 firms and 26,000 experts. The sector has significant activities such as fuselage production, structural component production, cabin interior, and electrical systems, producing around €2.5 billion annually.

The collaboration also enjoys the success of TDM Aerospace, Morocco’s first Tier-1 supplier, established in 2017. The firm deals with assembling tubes and ducts for international clients, including Boeing. With more than 23,000 engineers trained every year, Morocco is now poised to extend its capability further to intricate aircraft modules, landing gears, and ultimately full airplane assembly.

Boeing’s top management reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Morocco to grow its supply base and build its people. The aerospace excellence centers should drive innovation, employment, and skills creation, cementing Morocco’s place in the global aerospace sector even further.
